From Interstate 40 (best to use from Northern CA, Utah, Flagstaff, New Mexico, etc.)

Take I-40 to Hwy 89 South toward Prescott. It is the Ash Fork exit (west of Flagstaff by about 50 miles).  This is the much less mountainous, less curvy road.
Proceed on 89 South through the town of Chino Valley, past Prescott Airport on the Left, straight under the overpass of Hwy 89A (toward Phoenix/Jerome/Prescott Valley).
You're going to go up through the majestic Granite Dells on hwy 89.  You'll come to the round-a-bout and you'll continue 3/4 of the way through the Round-a-bout, yielding to any traffic already in the Round-a-bout, and into Watson Lake Park.
Distance from I-40 to Watson Lake:  approximately 50 miles.

From Sedona/Camp Verde

Go South on 17, take Hwy 169/Cherry Rd Exit, Follow until it T's with Hwy 69 and turn Right at that stoplight onto Hwy 69.
Continue until the Third Stoplight with Prescott Country Club on the Left. You're turning Right here onto Fain Rd (Toward Interstate 40/Chino Valley/Fairgrounds). This will take you around the back side of Prescott Valley, avoiding traffic and multiple stoplights.
Proceed untill you see the Prescott/Ash Fork/89 turnoff. It is the first exit after you go under the only overhead bridge. Turn Left at the bottom of the exit Ramp.
If you miss the Prescott/Ash Fork/89 exit and get to the intersection of Willow Creek Rd, you've gone too far; though you could simply turn left at the stoplight there and go to the intersection of Willow Lake Rd and turn left there (at Frys) and then go straight through the Round-a-bout. That would be the the scenic route with the Willow Lake view.
So, once you take the Prescott exit, turn Left at the bottom of the ramp (if you turn Right you're headed North toward Interstate 40).  You're going to go up through the majestic Granite Dells on 89.  You'll come to the round-a-bout and you'll continue 3/4 of the way through the Round-a-bout, yielding to any traffic already in the Round-a-bout, and into Watson Lake Park.
